How to Reduce Waste

Recycling: Sometimes it feels like you need to have done a masters in the subject to know what goes in what bings. Maddening that every counsel recycles different things in different ways. In Sussex the green collection bin is for general rubbish, and the black bin for recycling. My view has always been if in doubt keep it out. Otherwise danger that everything gets put in general rubbish. (See article) Recycling is frustrating overcomplicated, inconsistent mess.
Easy Recycling Mistakes to Make: It is important to make sure only materials that can be recycled by the council is put in the household waste otherwise polluted recycling can all be sent to landfill. With this in mind there are a number of common misconceptions as to what things can be recycled on ones doorstep.
Things that do NOT go in household waste: (Although check specific Council guidance)
-
Compostible stuff
-
Anything with a Recycling symbol - Just because something has a recyling symbol doesn't mean it can be recycled anywhere.
-
Soft plastic packaging - Is not recylcable at all.
-
Tetra back - Can be recyled at some recycling centres, but not from doorstep.
-
Soft plastic bottles, such as toothpaste tubes, and some creams, shampoos etc(Some places such as supermarkets take them, but will need to look up)
-
Broken Glass (Panes of glass)
-
Disposable Coffee Cups
